Program Description:

Stirling logo

Founded in 1967, the University of Stirling is consistently rated highly for both teaching and research. There are currently 7,000 undergraduate students and 2,500 postgraduate students studying at the University. The 350-acre campus, located beneath the Ochil Hills, has a beautiful loch and the 18th-century Airthrey Castle at its heart. It is also very easy to get around, with all the facilities (housing, teaching buildings, social and sporting centres) no more than a ten-minute walk apart, ensuring that everything you need is close at hand – day or night. The University is just two miles (a ten-minute bus ride) from the city of Stirling.

Stirling CastleLocated less than an hour away from Edinburgh on the east and Glasgow on the west, the City of Stirling is one of the principal towns on the edge of the Scottish highlands, and is known as the 'heart of Scotland.' It provides easy access to mountains, lochs and shores, perfect for outdor activities such as walking, canoeing, mountain biking and sailing. Dominated by its medieval castle, which overlooks the Forth, Stirling has been historically important since the Middle Ages.  It now combines the charm of an historic destination with the vitality of a contemporary city, offering shopping, café culture, performing arts and nightlife

Stirling is ranked high in teaching and research assessments in the U.K.  It is unique in the U.K. in having a true semester plan (mid-September to mid-December and mid-January to late May).  Students take 3 classes 20 credits each semester worth 5 U.S. credits apiece.   Students may choose from a wide range of courses across subject areas.  Work is continuously assessed, including essays, exams and presentations.  Each class requested by a student is approved or denied by the sponsoring department, and so students must pay attention that they meet the acceptable pre-requisites for specific classes. Living Arrangements

Exchange and visiting students are guaranteed on-campus housing, mainly in apartment-style housing or chalets, in single study-bedrooms. The housing provides social space and kitchens for self-catering.  There are several restaurants, coffee bars and laundry facilities on campus.  Housing is located close to classes and other university facilities including:  computing labs, newsagent, pharmacy, bookshop, pubs, a bank, post office and travel agency. A range of accommodation is available and international students will normally be housed with both UK and overseas students. Accommodation applications and details are sent to students upon acceptance to Stirling.
