Program Description:

Sussex logo

The University of Sussex was founded in 1961 and since then has established an international reputation for the quality of its research and for its innovative and effective styles of teaching.  The total student population is over 12,000, of whom about 25% are from outside the UK. The campus is small enough to be friendly, yet sufficiently large to offer a lively social scene.  Lecture halls, seminar rooms, libraries, laboratories, housing, restaurants, bars and sports facilities are all within easy walking distance.

The campus is situated in a beautiful area amidst rolling hills just a few minutes from the lively south coast Swansea aerial shotresort of Brighton.  Known for its eccentric and cosmopolitan atmosphere, Brighton is a wonderful place to be a student, with plenty of boutiques, open-air cafes, theaters, pubs and a cutting-edge club scene.  Brighton is less than an hour's train journey from central London and well placed for international travel.  The city is 30 minutes from Gatwick Airport, and Sussex is also ideally located for trips across the English Channel to mainland Europe.

Sussex is organized into eleven Schools of Studies, each offering related courses in various disciplines and grouped together to help students develop a wider perspective on their subjects. Students may select courses from a wide range of options, and it is possible to select courses from different years and to mix courses from different schools.  Visiting & Exchange students are welcome to choose from any of the courses when they apply, provided they have met the relevant academic prerequisites - students are not limited to courses of a particular major. A full course load is 60 UK credits per semester (16 UMass credits), with most courses worth 15 UK credits (4 UMass credits).  Course catalogue. Level 4 classes are roughly equivalent to freshman/sophomore classes at UMass, Level 5=junior and Level=6 senior.
