Swansea logo

Founded in 1920, Swansea is a vibrant, research-led university at the forefront of academic and scientific discovery. It is set in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the breathtaking Gower Peninsula.  Swansea University has around 15,000 students and offers over 500 undergraduate and 130 postgraduate courses in a wide range of subject areas, from American Studies to Zoology. A full range of social, cultural and sporting amenities complements the campus lifestyle and contributes to the strong sense of community that the University embraces. View a YouTube video about why a US exchange student chose Swansea.

The University is located on Swansea Bay, a 5 mile stretch of stunning coastline and is a 10 minute walk from the city center. To the west of the University is the Gower Peninsula, which was designated the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the UK. It is home to some of the world’s best beaches.  In addition to its striking scenery, Wales has more castles per square mile than any other European country. Swansea is located just three hours from London and has excellent transport
links to the capital and other major UK cities. Visit Swansea Bay

Swansea University, Wales

Swansea University uses the traditional British three-term calendar.  Fall and/or Spring terms may be supplemented with a 2-week Swansea Pre-Session, which feature a 3-credit course on British and Welsh Politics, Culture and Society.  Students take 60 (15 UMass) credits per semester from a wide variety of offerings. Swansea Online Module Catalogue  Students may also cross-register among 34 departments.  Courses are primarily taught in a lecture and seminar format and are supported by smaller tutorial sessions.

Semester 1 (TB1) modules in Biological Sciences, Economics, Business and Geography are all assessed by examination in January and students are required to be present in Swansea for these.

Note:  For students wishing to take Biology classes, in general, only Level 1 and Level 2 modules are available. Level 3 modules are only possible if students have a significant background in that subject area. There are no re-sit opportunities for Level 3 modules.  All students  will need to ensure they have the necessary pre-requisites and any requests will have to be approved by the faculty within Biological Science.

The Economics Department will only allow full-year exchange students to take classes.

Living Arrangements

Students may choose between on-campus halls offering a cafeteria and meal plans, or off-campus apartment-style housing which is self-catering.  On-campus halls are closed during vacation periods.  There are also a number of shared student houses in the city close to the University.  Most accommodations feature single bedrooms and shared kitchen and living facilities. Students are expected to pay a deposit when accepted to the University and then pay the remainder of rent upon arrival in Swansea.
