Yonsei University is a large research university with 17,600 undergraduates and 11,800 graduate students, 19 Colleges and 18 graduate programs, 131 research institutes and centers. Yonsei offers over 700 courses taught in English throughout its curriculum, and exchange students can easily choose among the 50+ offered each semester in the areas of Korean Studies, Political Science, Natural and Physical Sciences, Engineering, Business, Economics, International Studies, etc. This is a direct enrollment program in which you are taking classes alongside other international students (4,500 total on campus) and Korean students.
Founded in 1885 by Christian missionaries, Yonsei has grown tremendously and is considered among the top 4 universities in Korea. A Global MBA program taught in English is available to graduate exchange students and advanced undergraduates. The campus is located in a central part of the national capital, but has a spacious and wooded campus perched on moderate hills overlooking the city of Seoul.
Location
Located in the Sodaemun-gu section of Seoul,
there are several prestigious universities in Sinchon ("University Town") area, including Yonsei. There are plenty of shops and restaurants in easy reach of the campus. The campus is large with dramatic architecture including many Western-style and Asian-style buildings. Subway and bus lines are convenient to campus and the main downtown area of Seoul including the National Assembly Building is just 20 minutes away by subway.
Academics
Yonsei University strives to offer as many courses as possible in English in a wide variety of disciplines.
The Yonsei International Summer School (YISS) offers 100 courses taught in English, as well as Korean language courses at 6 levels including beginner. Students may enroll in two or three courses. It also offers a research internship option and a corporate internship option, which carries 3 credits. To view courses taught at YISS, click here.
The Winter Abroad at Yonsei (WAY) program offers a 3 week session that allows students to return to UMass in time for spring semester. (The second 2 week session is not an option for UMass students.) About 25 courses in Asian Studies, Korean Studies, Korean language and others are available. Students may enroll in two courses, and earn 6 credits. To view courses taught at WAY, click here.
Living Arrangements
On campus housing is not guaranteed by the university due to limited availability, so students should apply to the program and for housing as soon as possible through the housing website.
