Program Description:

The Victoria University of Manchester, founded in 1851, was the first of England's great civic universities and has been regarded as one of the country's top institutions for both teaching and research.  The University of Manchester, formed in 2004 from the merger of the Victoria University with the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), now ranks as the largest single-site higher education institution in the country with over 35,500 students. It is also the UK's most popular university--receiving more applications for undergraduate study than any other British university.

The University of Manchester is centrally located in the city of Manchester. It is 20 minutes drive away from Manchester International Airport and 10 minutes away from the main train station, from which you can travel to the rest of the UK via an extensive rail network.

The University is within walking distance of the city centre and main attractions like museums, shopping centres, theatres and sports venues. The City offers a wide choice of food outlets and restaurants. We are at the doorstep of the Curry Mile, well known for its Indian/Pakistani  food. The China Town is the largest in the country with a number of Chinese, Korean and Japanese supermarkets. You can find contemporary British cuisine in Didsbury and famous chefs run their restaurants such as Jamie Oliver and Pierre White.

Within short distance of Manchester are the beautiful national parks of the Peak District, Lake District, Lancashire, Yorkshire and Cheshire. You will find beautiful natural scenery and tranquil spots in these places. They are popular tourist attractions for British families and international tourists.

Course options include Manchester: Original/Modern, The “Real” Downton Abbey, and From the Beatles to Oasis: popular music in British Culture. The course in the first week is mandatory, and in the second and third weeks there is a choice of two module options. They will be delivered by University faculty members who are experts in the field and relevant trips will be organised for each course. You will also have free time to explore the exciting city of Manchester as well as famous attractions on the doorstep, such as Old Trafford (Manchester United football ground), the Lake District, or venture further afield to London or Edinburgh.

The courses are 4 US credits each and involves 45 contact hours including lectures and field visits. In addition, you are expected to allocate self study time to complete reading and assessment. All the courses are run at the beginners’ level and therefore do not require prior knowledge in the field.
